Read on to explore the key features and important updates in the upcoming new ITIL version.

What Is Changing in the ITIL (Version 5)?

ITIL (Version 5) delivers guidance that spans the entire organization, enabling teams to collaborate effectively, align priorities, and drive measurable value in both stable and rapidly evolving environments. Key innovations include a modern, comprehensive framework that is AI-native and complexity-ready, integrates products and services, emphasizes digital experience, and ensures continuity with previous ITIL versions.

The ITIL (Version 5) certification scheme has also been simplified and updated, making it easier for professionals to advance their ITSM expertise. Learn more about the new ITIL certification paths here.

Why Has ITIL Certification Been Updated?

The ITIL® framework has been updated to meet the demands of today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. Organizations now need to operate faster, smarter, and more flexibly—especially as AI reshapes how work gets done.

ITIL® (Version 5) evolves to match this AI-driven, fast-changing environment, offering practical guidance that helps professionals across all roles and teams deliver, manage, and continuously improve digital products and services. This update ensures ITSM practices remain relevant, actionable, and aligned with modern organizational needs.

When Will the New ITIL Version Be Released?

The first ITIL (Version 5) certification to launch will be ITIL® Foundation (Version 5), available starting from February 12th, 2026. Advanced modules will follow in a phased rollout beginning in March 2026, with iLEARN providing updates as each new module becomes available.

What Does This Mean for ITIL 4 Certified Professionals?

If you already hold ITIL® 4 Foundation certificate, there is no need to retake the certification—your Foundation is fully recognized as a prerequisite for all advanced ITIL (Version 5) modules.

For professionals holding a single ITIL 4 certificate (other than Foundation) without an advanced designation—such as ITIL 4 Practice Manager, ITIL 4 Strategic Leader, or ITIL 4 Managing Professional—the recommended approach is to select an ITIL (Version 5) path that aligns with your career goals. Your ITIL® 4 experience remains valuable, providing context that will make your transition to the new framework smoother.

For professionals holding an ITIL 4 designation (ITIL 4 Practice Manager, ITIL 4 Managing Professional, ITIL 4 Strategic Leader or ITIL 4 Master) a specific transition pathway has been created. Learn more about the transition from ITIL 4 to ITIL Version 5 on our dedicated page.

Currently, no retirement date has been announced for ITIL 4, meaning ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5) certifications will coexist for the time being.
